TALKING ABOUT WALES By John F. Wake john] at [wales-tours.com WALES IS GOING THROUGH A GOLDEN PERIOD. Thanks so much for all your e.mails re St. Davids Day. It looks as though it may grow into some very substancial events worldwide. Really hope so. Well Cardiff City are going to Wembley in the FA Cup Semi Finals. 40,000 football fans on the road to London from Wales. Guess what? The main railway line between England and Wales is closed the weekend of the game for track maintenance. It’s a ploy to stop us!!? Also Wales are top of the tree when it comes to Rugby this 2007/8 Six Nations. Wow! Guess what also? Wales is top of the singles charts. DUFFY has been number one for three weeks in the U.K. in both singles and first Album. She emanates from North Wales and is fluent Welsh. Its her first language! Now what else? Swansea City F.C are top of the Division One league in the English soccer divisions. In fact 8 points clear!! Oh, and what about the ’spat’ between the English and Welsh Parliaments? The Welsh have cancelled any form of car parking charges at all their hospitals. The English do not like it and have complained. They still pay charges at theirs. The Welsh do not pay Prescription Charges either. Over 60, you can travel anywhere in Wales for free on the buses. Proud to be Welsh in 2008. I should say so!!! Have a look at WALES (Little Memories, Cameos and Vignettes) http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=vcOS61NCib4

Caerphilly Castle The Friends of Ysgol Gynradd Y Castell Caerphilly are in the process of producing a calendar for 2009. It will consist of photographs of the castle taken by the children of the school. At this time no other calendar solely of Caerphilly Castle exists. Our project is receiving the full backing of CADW - Welsh Heritage. We are aiming to raise the profile of a wonderful local primary school whilst raising funds to support the work that goes on there. At present we estimate the calendar will sell for approximately £8 and will be available for purchase from September onwards in local stores and via the school web site. We are currently contacting Welsh ex pats groups to gauge what interest there would be in our calendar and give people the opportunity to request further information, and details of how to place orders if the are interested. We are happy to post world wide but obviously any p&p charges would be added to the cost of the calendar. Friends of the school is a group of enthusiastic parents who are working hard to raise funds to support the efforts of the teaching staff and our children. The calendar is being produced by us. All of the proceeds will go directly towards funding projects in the school. No other business or organisation will benefit from sales of the calendar. The children of the school are assisting us with all aspects of this project, not just taking the photographs. It would be a great achievement for them to think that people all over the world are buying their calendars and looking at their photographs. We would appreciate it if you could support us by telling all of your members about the project. They can then contact us via this email address if they are interested in finding out more. We look forward to hearing from our fellow welsh men and woman world wide. Diolch yn fawr, Fiona Fiona Thomas (Friends of Ysgol Y Castell) fionathomas75] at [hotmail.com
Australia The Newcastle & Hunter Region Welsh Society Belated thanks for the converge you gave The Newcastle & Hunter Region Welsh Society for the annual dinner and 25th Anniversary of the Society on March 1st. We very much appreciate the advertising you did for us. There were 88 guests, loads of hwyl and a great Guest Speaker, Mr Aneurin Rhys Hughes of Canberra and former Ambassador to the EU. The celebration cake was cut by the foundation President, Mr. Glyn Jenkins (ex Ammanford) and original members and there was loud applause. The world can be a small place! I received an email from a gentleman, Mr Geraint Rees (ex Aberystwyth) who had lived in Australia for 15 years and had returned to live in Wales. Geraint has a brother, Dave/Dai living in Newcastle who is not computer conversant so Geraint rang him from Wales and gave him my phone number. On March 1st, we were very happy to welcome Dai & Carole Rees and they really enjoyed the evening. They have become members of the Society. Canada Burlington Welsh Male Chorus The Burlington Welsh Male Chorus www.burlingtonwelshmalechorus.com will be touring New York & Boston, starting Sept 12th thru 20th.2008. Singing at Carnegie Hall on the 16th. From Burlington Ontario Canada, having had a successful tour last year of the UK and singing at the Royal Albert Hall, was such a wonderful experience. Now they are preparing for New York and are hoping to meet many more Welsh ( and wanabe)Welsh friends. For more info please check out www.burlingtonwelshchorus.com St David’s Day was again a sold out event at the Burlington Centaurs Rugby Club., Burlington Ontario. The famous “fagot kings”(the William Brothers, Ray & Adrian), excelled them selves again with their tasty meals for over 60 people, of fagggots & peas and mint sauce(yum). The leek & potato soup was delicious , as always and the welsh cakes and bara brith, went down a treat. Then the local talent started, with our MC and fountain of knowledge, John Truman. Then the musical entertainment from many of our talented singers, Ang & Gerry Hubbell, Kay Lewis, Dai Paul, Craig Howells, Cye Beechey, GUITARIST JULIAN MURRAY. We always make some “Englishman” an honouree “Welshman” with a bardic ceremony and make them eat a leek and wash it down with a pint of beer. Then our famous “mini choir” part of the Burlington Welsh Male Chorus, sang “Tom Jones come Home “written by John Langford,a Newport boy, from their famous Day Boo, at the Chicago Celtic Festival last September .We ended with our National Anthem. We are all looking forward to next years event, and are hoping for a larger venue, so more can partake in this awesome yearly event. www.burlingtonwelshmalechorus.com info] at [burlingtonwelshmalechorus.com From Kay Lewis(unofficial social secretary/entertainer/artist) Kay Lewis
